About James Patterson

Hello, I'm James Patterson, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), and Clinical Chaplain. My diverse background encompasses over 33 years of experience with specialties in various therapeutic techniques.

Armed with dual masters' degrees from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, my journey has taken me cross-country aiding countless individuals, couples, groups and families while serving as a chaplain and war veteran.

I’m passionate about using my extensive array of knowledge to help you navigate life's challenges - let’s build bridges towards growth together.

Experience & Specializations

Throughout my many years in the mental health field, I've encountered a wide range of situations and worked with diverse populations. From bustling cities like San Diego and San Antonio to rural areas in Kansas and Alaska, my experiences have been varied and enlightening.

In these settings, such as community clinics or private practices, I offered individual therapy as well as marriage counseling, family therapy, and group sessions.

I hold specializations in Solution Focused Therapy, Growth Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy among others. As an experienced licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), my expertise lies specifically within post-deployment readjustment healing for military personnel - especially war veterans - their spouses/children; depression management; divorce coping strategies; PTSD treatment plans; sexual trauma recovery techniques; moral injury healing processes etc., amidst other areas of focus.

With this rich tapestry of experience under my belt, it's heartening to stand by you through whatever life throws at you.

Approaches & Techniques

Equipping myself with various counseling approaches and techniques is essential for providing the best care to my clients. My toolbox contains methods such as Solution Focused Therapy, a goal-directed collaborative approach that emphasizes solutions rather than problems.

This technique encourages clients to develop a vision of their future and offers them support in turning this image into reality.

Another powerful technique I utilize is Prolonged Exposure Therapy. This method specializes in helping individuals who have experienced traumatic events confront these experiences head-on, reducing avoidance behaviors that can make symptoms worse.

It's a highly effective therapy for those dealing with PTSD or other trauma-related disorders.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) represents another fundamental approach in my practice. EMDR leverages dual attention stimulation to help process distressing memories, significantly reducing their emotional impact on the individual over time.

These represent just some of the many tactics I employ in my counseling sessions, each one chosen carefully according to client needs and personal circumstances.

Passion for Helping Others

Helping people is not just my profession, it's a calling. I find immense fulfillment in assisting individuals and families navigate life's challenges, providing the tools they need to enrich their lives.

It brings me joy to be able to work alongside people and watch them grow from their struggles, become stronger and thrive.

My drive towards helping others extends beyond just counseling sessions. I enjoy being an advocate for my clients, offering invaluable support through various elements of their lives.

My commitment goes beyond healing wounds; I focus on fostering growth and resilience. Each client encounter offers a unique opportunity to make a positive difference in someone’s life – that's the kind of passion that keeps me motivated every day as your licensed therapist!
